Abstract

In this paper, we start from the idea that public spaces are the important preconditions of spontaneous sociability, social cohesion and social capital, as well as sustainable urban development in general. This idea was tested on selected data from two complementary empirical researches on parks in Novi Sad - qualitative and quantitative. We show that the Novi Sad parks are the important preconditions of sustainable urban development, that they serve the satisfaction of a number of social, psychological and ecological needs and provide a suitable framework for the development and facilitation of democratic practices. The potentials of these social goods, threatened by general economic trends (privatization and commodification of space) is based on the capacities of local political actors, urban planners and space users - citizens.
