MULTILINGUALISM IN MEDIA POLICY

This paper discusses the issue of media functioning of ethnic minorities, with an emphasis on minority media in Vojvodina. It points out the inability of linear, uniform resolution of minority needs for information with regard to their territorial distribution, abundance, urbanization and constituted minority. However, the practice of informing on the language of national minorities began in the Republic of Serbia well before the intensification of European initiatives and guidelines, which commits the state to establish and support the media for ethnic minorities. This practice was not compromised even when the economic analysis confirmed objectively high cost of maintenance of minority media, of which the most influential were financed from public sources or budget.
